“해동” East of the Sea

Come celebrate National Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with Westminster Conservatory of Music. I will be joined by my wonderful colleagues in presenting “해동- East of the Sea: Music of Korea.” It is a free concert on Saturday, May 14 at 7:30 pm in Hillman Recital Hall of Westminster Choir College.

Our program features works by three generations of Korean women composers: Young Ja Lee - “the mother of contemporary Korean music”, Shinuh Lee, the first woman on the Composition faculty at Seoul National University, and Jinsil Lee, one of the current generation of outstanding women composers from Korea. The program will conclude with the premier of Jinsil Lee’s “Variations on Arirang” for clarinet and piano, a beloved Korean folk song. Also included in the program are works by Isang Yun, one of the early pioneers in fusing the music of his homeland with the new 20th century music trends in Europe, as well as Korean art songs, and arrangements of popular Korean folk melodies by American composers.
